Book list

I have a problem. If I start reading a book, I need to finish it. Even if it's not a good book. I think that if I keep reading, it will get better. This is not always the case. I have been scared to start another book for the past month for that reason. I need a new GOOD book to read. It has been a while since I've read one that I couldn't put down. So please, let me know what some of your favorite novels are! A couple that I really liked are Enchanted by Orson Scott Card he is also the Author

The Giver

Jonas reached the opposite side of the river, stopped briefly, and looked back. The community where his entire life had been lived lay behind him now, sleeping. At dawn, the orderly, disciplined life he had always known would continue again, without him. The life where nothing was ever unexpected. Or inconvenient. Or unusual. The life without color, pain, or past. p.165 In celebration of an author's birthday in March, I read The Giver by Lois Lowry. This book was the 1994 winner of the Newber

Sunday Salon: plum blossoms and the end of the world

This has been a very nice Sunday as I got to read, take some pictures and enjoy the spring-like weather. But first let's backtrack a few days. If you visited last Sunday you may remember that I was wondering what to read next. I did indeed finish Housekeeping vs. The Dirt review here, then on Monday I stopped by the library on my way to a lesson. There I found Kira-Kira by Cynthia Kadohata, winner of the Newbery Medal in 2005. So instead of choosing from the books I should be reading, I spent

The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick

The Caldecott Medal is given out each year at the same time as the Newbery by the ALA to the artist of the most "distinguished American picture book for Children." Award-winning books that you might be familiar with include Make Way for Ducklings, Where the Wild Things Are, and The Polar Express. This year the winner, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, was a somewhat surprising choice because the book was over 550 pages long. Usually the books run from about 15-50 pages, so this is a big change.

Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! - The 2008 Newbery Medal Winner

I??m delighted to review the 2008 Newbery Medal Winner, Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! Voices from a Medieval Village. Its a wonderful book and I??m very pleased that the Newbery folks have once again chosen a work of historical fiction by far the most frequent category of the Newbery winners, going all the way back to 1922. For those who don??t know, the Newbery Medal is the Oscar of children??s books. It??s been awarded annually since 1922 and all but one or two of the winners are still in print.

This week we bring you the always fabulous Linda Sue Park. She most deservedly received a Newbery Medal for her book A Single Shard, the story of a young homeless boy in long ago Korean who watches the skilled potters at work and longs to make pots of his own. Just before interviewing Linda Sue, I read Project Mulberry--set in modern day, a girl and her best friend take on an ambitious school project--raising silk worms in the city. Since the interview, I had the chance to read an advance copy

Lois Lowry

The Giver by Lois Lowry Recommended Age: 12+ Few books have been recommended to me by more readers, and I guess few books you read this year will provoke as much thought as this multiple-award-winning, futuristic fantasy. Jonas lives in a community that, at first blush, might seem like the ideal future world. No one suffers. There is no war, poverty, or disease. Everyone is kind and courteous, living useful lives in well-adjusted family units. From birth to death, all the stressful decisions i

Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan Recommended Age: 10+ From this author of many children??s picture books and several young readers?? novels comes this 1986 winner of the Newbery Medal. It is a short novel, quickly read, yet one that you may want to savor. For not only is it a sweet story, but it is told with exceptional beauty. Sarah is, basically, a mail-order bride. She answers an ad from a widower farmer with a daughter and a son who sorely miss having a mother. Most of all, they
